In 2017, what’s it like to be a woman in the music industry? Pitchfork recently put out an article that showed bands with female members were less likely to be booked for popular festivals. That’s only one of the ways sexism shows up in the music industry. Female fronted acts face incredible pressure to meet an ideal only to be treated like a showpiece by promoters, managers, and audiences. The episode 8 panel explores their experiences with music industry sexism. They offer some perspectives on how to help change the expectations of women, and they share some of the ways sexism has impacted their careers. From their conversation, it’s clear that being a female fronted act still can still be a double edged sword.
