Speak Out: A Zine Exploring Gender Violence

by Julia Fogelson and Mary Mykhaylova

Library Location: D10

Speak Out posed the question to folks of all genders and sexual orientations in Santa Cruz, CA: have you experienced gendered violence? Speak Out got the word out by posting flyers around town, making announcements at public gatherings, reaching out the local newspaper and radio station, and creating a website for submissions.
The project is named Speak Out Santa Cruz because it’s time to create a platform for people to speak out about the injustices they have experienced based on their gender. This zine can be a source of consciousness-raising, a medium for self-expression, a way of giving voice and space to those who may have silenced in the past, a source of empowerment, a way of standing in solidarity, and a mechanism for educating our community.
